Measure the lunch box you already own — length, width and depth — and compare it against the internal dimensions listed on each product page. It sounds obvious, but a bag that's a few millimetres too tight is the single most common reason a lunch bag gets returned.

A few rules of thumb:

• Kindy and preschool (3–5 years): a small bag is plenty. Anything bigger just becomes something extra to drag around the mat at pack-up time.
• New entrants to Year 3: a medium bag that takes a bento box and one piece of fruit or a snack pot.
• Year 4 and up: go large. Appetites grow fast, and older kids often want a drink bottle in the same bag rather than in a side pocket.

If your child's backpack has a dedicated lunch compartment, check that measurement too — some school bags are narrower than they look.

An insulated lunch bag slows down how fast food warms up — it doesn't refrigerate. On a mild day, a well-packed bag kept out of direct sun will hold food at a safe temperature until lunchtime. Through a Kiwi summer, or if the bag lives in a sunny corridor cubby, you'll want some help.

The easiest fixes:

• Add a slim freezer block or a frozen drink bottle — it doubles as a cold pack and a cold drink by midday.
• Pack food already chilled, straight from the fridge. A lunch bag can't cool something down, only keep it cool.
• For anything that really needs to stay cold or hot — pasta, soup, leftovers — use an insulated food jar inside the bag rather than relying on the bag alone.

Wipe the lining out with a damp cloth and a little dish soap at the end of each day, then leave the bag unzipped overnight to air-dry properly. Trapped moisture is what causes that musty smell by week three of term.

For a deeper clean, spot-clean the outer fabric by hand. Insulated bags shouldn't go in the washing machine or the dryer — the heat and agitation break down the foam layer that does the insulating. If a spill has soaked right in, a paste of baking soda and water left on the mark for ten minutes usually lifts it.

Most families end up building the set gradually, and it's worth thinking about the pieces together so everything fits:

• Lunch boxes — the bento box that goes inside. Sized by age group.
• Snack boxes — for morning tea, so the main lunch stays intact.
• Drink bottles — check whether you want it inside the bag or clipped to the backpack.
• Lunch sets — matched pieces if you'd rather sort it in one go.

Each brand designs its bag around its own lunch box range first, so a Yumbox tray fits a Yumbox bag, a MontiiCo bento fits a MontiiCo bag, and so on. Plenty of combinations do cross over — but rather than guess, check the internal dimensions on the product page against your box before you order. It varies by product, so check the individual listing — some include one, some don't. If yours doesn't, any slim freezer block sized to lie flat against the lunch box will do the job.

The bags have a wipe-clean waterproof lining that contains small spills and makes clean-up easy, but the bag itself isn't a sealed container. Leakproofing comes from the lunch box — if a drink bottle or a yoghurt pot tips inside, the lining will hold it long enough for you to wipe it out.

For kindy-aged children, look for a single main zip with a large pull tab, and skip bags with multiple compartments or clips. Practise at home a few times before term starts — being able to open their own lunch independently makes a real difference to how much actually gets eaten.
