About this umbrella
BLUNT's Radial Tensioning System works the frame, tips and canopy together as one structure. Six patented BLUNT tips open like miniature umbrellas inside pockets at the canopy edge, pulling the fabric taut into a rigid, wing-like surface. Wind tunnel tested to a Category 1 hurricane — 115km/h, measured by engineers at WSP in the southern hemisphere's most powerful wind tunnel.
The BLUNT Metro is the compact model in the BLUNT range — built for parents who are in and out of the car six times a day. At 37.5cm closed and 385g, it fits a backpack, satchel, laptop bag or a medium-to-large handbag, so it's already with you when the sky turns over on the way to pickup.
An auto-open button pops the 100cm canopy in one hand — useful when the other hand has a toddler in it. The 360° spinning canopy lets the top rotate when you clip a doorway or another parent at the school gate, protecting the core mechanism instead of bending it. And because the patented BLUNT tips replace the sharp ferrules found on ordinary umbrellas, there are no exposed points at head height in a crowded corridor.

BLUNT also repairs out-of-warranty umbrellas at their New Zealand repair centre for a small charge, because parts are replaceable rather than the whole umbrella. This warranty is provided by BLUNT and is in addition to your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

How wind-resistant is the BLUNT Metro?
BLUNT umbrellas are wind tunnel tested to 115km/h — Category 1 hurricane strength — measured by engineers at WSP in the southern hemisphere's most powerful wind tunnel. The Metro's Radial Tensioning System pulls the canopy taut through six patented tips at the edge, creating a rigid, aerodynamic surface rather than a loose one that catches the wind.
Will the BLUNT Metro blow inside out?
It can, and that's intentional. BLUNT designs their umbrellas so that in a strong gust the canopy may flip inside out to protect itself from damage, then flip back the right way without harming the structure. The Metro is the collapsible model in the range, so it's the most likely to do this. If it happens, turn it back and keep going — nothing is broken.
What is the BLUNT Radial Tensioning System?
It's BLUNT's patented canopy engineering. The frame uses a strut mechanism that stresses the ribs and pushes tension outward as the umbrella opens, while six patented BLUNT tips sit in pockets at the canopy edge and open like miniature umbrellas. The result is a high-tension canopy that behaves like a wing in wind, instead of a fabric dome that inverts.
How big is the Metro closed, and will it fit in a bag?
Closed, the Metro is 37.5cm long and weighs 385g. BLUNT designed it for backpacks, satchels, laptop bags, shopper totes and medium-to-large handbags. Open, the canopy is 100cm across — sized for one adult, or one adult and a small child tucked in close.
Does the standard Metro have UV protection?
No. UV ratings apply to BLUNT's dedicated UV range, which carries a 50+ UPF rating and blocks 99% of UV rays. The standard Metro is a rain umbrella and doesn't carry a UPF rating. If sun protection is what you're after, look for a Metro UV model specifically.
Can a BLUNT Metro be repaired if something breaks?
Yes. Every BLUNT is built from four modular components — canopy, frame, shaft and handle — that detach for replacement. BLUNT runs a repair centre in New Zealand and works on a repair-before-replace basis, including for out-of-warranty umbrellas, where a small repair and shipping charge applies. Repairs are arranged through a free B Hub account on BLUNT's website.
What warranty does it come with?
A 2-year global manufacturer's warranty covering manufacturing faults. Registering the umbrella with BLUNT adds a further 2 years of cover on mechanical parts, for four years total. Canopy replacements, general wear and tear, and accidental damage sit outside the warranty. Your rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act apply as well.
Where are BLUNT umbrellas made?
BLUNT is a New Zealand company headquartered in Auckland, and the umbrellas are designed in New Zealand. Manufacturing happens in Xiamen, China, with partners BLUNT has worked with for over twelve years — the hand-stitched canopy construction needs specialist skill.
Is the Metro a good umbrella for the school run?
